Starting a pest control business

Are you an entrepreneur and looking to start your own pest control business? It's a wonderful business to go into and very helpful to alot of people. You can become a hero to alot of people when you save that little old lady from the mouse that ran under her sink! You begin with researching the laws in your state as the pest control business is regulated by your state's department of agriculture. Then I would highly recommend consulting a lawyer and an accountant, but if you are starting on a shoe string you can get away with a good computer accounting program. You state's website will point you in the right direction as far as setting up your business. If you are already a pest control technician with your own license then your next step is to register your business with a BU number or whatever your state's equivalent is. Then it is time to get insurance. Wiseburger and Brown are two pest control insurance providers to look into, but there are others. If you are completely new then you would have to go to the state and take your core and category tests to get your license, then the BU number and insurance. I wouldn't recommend going into the pest control business cold turkey as there is a lot to learn to be a successful technician. The next step is advertising. You will also want to get some service slips and other stationary like business cards as well. There is alot to think about when going into your own pest control business, but with hard work and some luck it can be very rewarding.

I can't believe that there are scam artists from Nigeria and India looking "to start their pest control businesses", that's BS, haha

I'm looking to quit Terminix and start my own company. About how much money should I take a loan out for? I'm pretty sure I can easily take 100 customers a month with me right off the bat. I'm thinking I need a truck, service tickets, printer, chemicals/equipment, advertising, lawyer... but it seems like the toughest thing would be to purchase a good computer program to run the business. What's a good company for that? The Terminix software I use now is custom built, but there's gotta be some for small companies to buy.

If you folx are looking for softwares to run a biz, try Microsoft Office Accountant - it's free when you use it for services. When you have to take note of your stock, ok, that's 180 bucks. But it's worth it.

Hello!
Looking at all the posts, I can tell most people dont know whats involved in getting started in the pest control industry. to get started, the first thing you need is experience!
You cant start a business unless you have atleast 2 years experience, so the first step is to try to get a job, and train with a company. I have 27 years in the industry, and im just now taking the exams to go into business for myself.

for more info, I would be happy to answer any question. Tony..

why would you post on a public forum that you're going to steal 100 customers from terminex. my friend works there and he wasn't allowed to approach any of their customers for a year. if you do and some stupid customer accidently tells terminex they went with you instead then off to course you go and expect to be bankcrupt. you should really learn how to shut up while ur ahead.

also you don't need 2 years of experience to open a business in texas. you do however have to pass a series of exams that take over a year to take, once you have all the experience to challenge these exams. other states are difficult like cali, az, but Texas, if you study hard can be rewarding very fast.

I have 10 years as an applicator in California and want to start a business in Alabama. They said I should buy the Mallis Handbook of Pest Control to use to study for the test. Do I really need to buy this book at around $150 to pass the test or can I study other free material online. I already know a lot but don't want to pay for the test and not study the correct stuff and have to pay all over again. Thanks for any info.

Sounds like 10 years of experience is enough. You have the basiscs down and the tests are usually heavy on core...so if you have a good pest background you should be ok.

What state do you work in?

Hey Tony, 7 years in the industry. I got my CA in all 3 categories in my first 3 years. I feel like I'm ready to make that move. I'm tired of making the #1 Co. in the world rich while I spend all my time making! 55k-60k annually. Reply back please.
