Rodents Can Cause Fire

We spend a bunch of time on how to kill mice and rats and what they are and where they hide. This is all important stuff, especially on a blog dedicated to pest control information, but one thing that I think should be said and the public may not be too aware of it, mice and rats are fire bugs. Pest control professionals know that they are, I've seen this countless times in attics and basements where the insulation around wires have been gnawed on or crewed through all together, and this is why it is so important to keep mice and rats out and trap them if they are inside. If you have a pest control company, make it the first thing you say during a rodent inspection. Inform the client and recommend they get a good electrician in to repair or replace the wires that have been gnawed on. An ounce of prevention can go a long long way.

This is a really good point. A lot of people focus on the damage mice and rats can cause in your home and the contamination they can spread - but often overlook or just don't notice wires that have been gnawed that can present a fire hazard, especially if the wires are hidden behind furniture etc. Remember, mice can squeeze into extremely small spaces!

Exactly. Also, mice excerments near places where your wires might be are tell tale signs that those mice congregate there. It's best to call professional mice exterminators if you have a handful of mice running around chewing wires every night.

absolutely, Its squirrels you need to be most wary of! its estimated that 25% of unknown fire sources are squirrel related!

In areas of rodent activity, You should also pay attention to your potential for vehicle damage.
In Phoenix, I have seen many engine compartments become home to rodents & have seen thousands of dollars in auto repair bills further frustrate customers.
Keep an eye open for this activity as well.

Can't agree more, I think fire safety should be the top priority. Prevention is better than cure.

I didn’t have mice till about a year ago. My neighbor cleaned his garage out real properly and they will need to have moved on to our residence. I do not definitely have any awesome ideas. But I do realize that if a mouse is within your garage be conscious that they may get into your car or truck or into lawnmower engines. My father identified mice in his garage following he moved stuff into it from a shed that he was tearing down. The mice had gotten into a generator B/S engine and ate the coil wire. Then they mice got into the engine compartment of his car or truck and chewed on wires there. They ought to be attracted to the smell with the coating about the wires. He employed Decon even within the engine compartment in frustration to kill the tiny bastards.
Me personally I'm going to attempt some Pine sol and perhaps set some traps out.
