Do Bug Bombs Work?

Yes and no. Insect foggers or bug bombs as some people call them serve the purpose of releasing a "fog" of contact killing pesticide into the air with the hopes that it will contact bugs in areas that you couldn't get to while just spraying.

Foggers, while initially effective, often times push roaches into deeper hiding where the fog will not reach, causing roaches to re-infest an area a few weeks down the line. They usually won't affect insect eggs either, making the problem tough to get rid of by just using the bug bombs.

Insect foggers are also dangerous is misused. They can be extremely flammable and explosive and if not set off correctly it will combust.

The best way to use a fogger is as a tool in an overall program. Professionals will use a fogger to flush out the roaches and get them running. Before they set the bug bomb off they will put down a residual product around the perimeter and in cracks and crevices. Then the roaches or insect will run across the residual product and die.

One good application for a fogger is if you are dealing with large numbers of flying insects. A good fog can knock that problem down fairly quickly.

  1. Thanks for sharing this! I was thinking about getting some bug bombs to take care of a pest control problem I have, if they end up not working I will have to hire a pest control in Edmonton to do the job.

  2. I would generally steer clear of any bug bombs and would only use a fogging machine for very specific treatments. As mentioned, these can in fact push the insect into the walls.

  3. I use a company that doesn't use foggers. They actually just do the entrances like doors and windows. fumigation can sometimes be harmful.

  11. We appreciate that you mentioned the possible dangers of using foggers or bug bombs. Especially those who have small children or pets need to take extra precaution that the area that is be fogged are completely sealed off for at least the recommended amount of time described on the fogger. We recommend leaving the house completely for the prescribed amount of time. Here at Surprise Pest Control, we use proper precaution whenever using any type of fogger to take care of customer’s extermination needs.

In fact, I agree with the guy who does my pest control in Vancouver, if you think you have to resort to a bug bomb, its more likely that you are too lazy to maintain a bug free environment than that you REALLY need a bug bomb. Obviously, not a rule, but my own thoughts.

  45. Many people in our area of brooklyn new york try to use bug bombs for bed bugs. As with many other insects what this does is it creates the facade that the insects are gone. What really happens is the bug bomb works almost as a repellent and drives the bugs deeper into the walls. If you live in a building you can cause a building wide infestation by carelessly setting off bombs. Read more info on our bed bug extermination blog

  98. That is a good thing to know that do it yourself bug bomb or foggers do not always work. It is better to get professional pest control services to take care of things than try and do it yourself. That is because sometimes the pests hide deeper where the fog cannot reach. That is why it is better to go with a professional company instead.
